Janaia, when elected as our next Sheriff what is your top priority?
Making sure people feel safe and secure at their place of business, school, home and in public. Our children have the right to feel comfortable and protected in school, without the bad influence of drugs, gangs and violence. Our businesses will only prosper if they are in a crime free environment.
Janaia, how do you feel about gun control?
I am a strong supporter of the United States Constitution and the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. If there were to come a time where the Federal Government were to confiscate law abiding citizen’s guns, ammunition or other weapons, I would not send my deputies to assist or support the taking away of citizens weapons.
If we have another pandemic like Covid-19 what would be your stance as Sheriff?
First, I would look at the survivability rate of the people who contracted the virus. If for example, the survivability rate was 99% like Covid-19 was (99 out of 100 people survived) I would not force people to stay at home. I would not force businesses to shut down, which destroys our local and state economies. The citizens in our community are smart enough to decide for themselves and their families if they need to stay at home or wear a mask, based on their own individual medical needs. I would never send my deputies into a church or religious gathering to arrest a pastor, priest, religious leader or any worshiper for exercising their right to pray to God.
I have had the privilege of working with Janaia Katzmann Hyland during my career at the Sheriff's Office and I am supporting her for Campbell County Sheriff. She has experience in every aspect of department operations including detention, patrol, investigations, narcotics, civil process and administration. During her career she rose through the ranks to sergeant and had the responsibility of commanding deputies in the performance of their many duties, training and professional development. She is kind, articulate, compassionate and astute. She is a woman of intelligence, courage, integrity and devotion to our citizens and our community. Janaia is highly respected by her peers, leaders and the many citizens she has served over her 20+ year career. We are fortunate to have wonderful law enforcement services in our county and I encourage you to continue that by supporting Janaia Katzmann Hyland with your vote. - Captain (Retired) Gregory A. Bennick I worked with Janaia for approximately 24 years. She was an excellent leader and was well respected by her peers. Over the years, she excelled at her craft making her more than qualified to become the Campbell County Sheriff. - Judy Field I had the pleasure of working with Janaia for many years. Janaia is and has always been dedicated to both the employees of the Sheriff’s Office and to the Citizens of Campbell County. She has the vision and dedication to lead the Sheriff’s Office through any challenge it will face in the future. Janaia is someone who can think outside the box to retain excellent employees, run a fiscally responsible budget and provide the best possible service to the citizens of Campbell County. – Gina Monk I worked as a Deputy for the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office for 24 and 1/2 years of my 26 and 1/2 year career in Law enforcement. Janaia Hyland was hired a few months before me. We have worked together the majority of that time as deputies. Janaia was involved in many aspects in the patrol division, wearing many hats over the years (field training officer, shift supervisor, investigations, a stint with the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigations). When I heard Janaia was running for Campbell County Sheriff, I knew I would be supporting her. She was well respected as a supervisor and always cared about other employees. I believe she will do a great job for the citizens of Campbell County. - Gary Spears Janaia Hyland is an excellent candidate Sheriff. She brings many years of law enforcement skills with her. Campbell County will be in good hands with this lady as Sheriff. - Rick D. Jones During the time that I was at the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, I worked with Janaia Hyland in her multiple roles as a street officer, shift supervisor, and criminal investigator. In those many years she was one that I sought out for assistance. Her competence, work ethics, and desire for continuing education gave me confidence that she would successfully complete whatever assignment she was take with. As Sheriff, I would trust her to perform her duties with professionalism, integrity, and compassion when needed. In addition, she does not lie, her feet don’t stink, and she believes in Jesus, all notable traits. - Curt Wendleboe, Campbell County Deputy Sheriff (retired) I have known Janaia since she was a teenager. I know her to be kind, courteous and trustworthy. She is a good listener and a caring person. I believe she will always do the right thing for the right reason. - Diane Hamilton When I worked at the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department with Janaia I was impressed with her understanding of the flow of law enforcement. While a deputy’s contact with a criminal incident may seem to be “law enforcement” to many, it is only the start of a process that continues through the judicial system. Janaia understood the importance of professional reports and what is needed by others in the system to make those reports complete. The report is the source of information to the Sheriff and his administration, then passed onto the Campbell County Attorney and possibly into the court system. Janaia’s understanding, education, experience and attention to detail will make her position as Sheriff one that will both smoothly transition important cases to the County Attorney, but also recognize the need for advice in reports and case handling improvements to be passed back down the chain of command. This requires experience in working real enforcement, on the street and as an investigator for years. Janaia Hyland has this experience. - Steve Hamilton
Janaia, is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
Yes, I think our county needs new ideas and I am eager to keep us moving together in the right direction. I believe that I have fresh new concepts that will help the sheriff’s office head in a direction our community will be proud of. Many communities in the United States have been plagued by violence, riots, and hate. We need to be careful to not fall into that trap. We need to look at the way we police our community and make sure law enforcement is headed in the correct direction. Communication is an integral part of any process, people should know whenever they have a problem they can call us at the sheriff’s office to help and then call me if necessary – even if it is something simple like kids causing problems in a neighborhood, or a problem house nearby. That is what being a sheriff is about, helping the community solve problems, not second guessing the people we represent.
